Caving Bovec

The Kanin mountains hide a world that most visitors never see. Tunnels carved by snowmelt over millennia, stone halls lined with fossils, and chambers where sunlight finds its way through cracks in the rock. Two guided cave tours near Bovec, no experience needed.

Mala Boka

The world beneath Boka

A short drive from Bovec brings you to the trailhead, then twenty minutes through forest to an entrance hidden so well that only locals know where to look.

Step inside and the landscape changes. A spacious stone hall opens in front of you, lined with stalactites and stalagmites that have grown undisturbed for millennia. Deeper in, the passages narrow and you crawl on all fours through tunnels from one chamber to the next. In places, sunlight breaks through cracks overhead and the walls feel closer to a cathedral than a cave.

Here and there you drop onto all fours or squeeze through a tighter gap, but none of it demands real fitness. If you stay calm in enclosed spaces and enjoy moving, Mala Boka is one of the finer ways to spend a morning or afternoon near Bovec. After about ninety minutes underground, you exit and walk 45 minutes back through the forest to the vehicle.

Srnica

Fossils and a rope descent

The entrance to Srnica cave sits near the Gljun stream, just outside Bovec. The tour leads through a tangled system of tunnels and halls where the walls are studded with fossils, among them heart-shaped shells, traces of a time when the rock beneath your feet was an ocean floor.

The geology here is different from Mala Boka: more broken up, more layered, with formations that tell a story of millions of years of change. What you will remember most is the finish. At the exit you clip into a rope and descend 40 metres down the rock face, straight out of the mountain. No rope experience is needed; your guide sets up the system and talks you through every step.

It is an adrenaline finish that turns a cave tour into a real adventure. After the descent, a shorter walk brings you back to the vehicle and the drive to base.

Frequently Asked Questions

For more information, feel free to contact us.

No. Both tours are guided from start to finish, and your guide explains every technique before you use it. First-timers complete these tours every day. The rope descent at Srnica needs no experience either; your guide sets up the system and talks you through every step.
Both caves accept children from age 9, accompanied by an adult. A child needs to be comfortable in dark, enclosed spaces, and fine with some crawling and climbing. If you are unsure whether your child is ready, message us and we will decide together.
Be honest with yourself here. Both tours pass through narrow, dark sections with little room around you. You do not need real fitness, and if you are used to a longer hill walk the physical side will not trouble you. But if enclosed spaces cause you genuine anxiety, caving may not be the right choice, and that is completely fine. Message us and we will suggest something with the same sense of adventure but without the tight spots.
The caves stay between 10 and 12 °C year-round, whatever the weather outside. That is noticeably cool, especially after the hike in. We provide a cave suit that keeps you comfortable, and we recommend a long-sleeved base layer underneath.
Usually not. Each tour takes a full morning or afternoon, so doing both in one day would be too much. Most visitors pick one and pair it with a different activity the next day. If you have several days in Bovec, doing both on separate days is a great option.
Aktivni Planet Outdoor Sports Center, Industrijska cona 4, Bovec. Free parking. It is 200 m outside Bovec centre toward Vršič, look for the Planet Bar. In early and late season we meet at our town-centre office at Trg golobarskih žrtev 19, Bovec.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your booking. If we cancel due to conditions, you get a full refund or a reschedule, whichever you prefer.
